They had a background as architects and building-technicians, and their ambitions was to contribute with sustainable homes and help local communities in developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word <em>settlement<\/em> should be understood as a reference to everything about the home, including life <em>between<\/em> the houses - everything that matters to the conditions of settlement. Both then and today, the understanding of sustainability lay in a combination of technological, economic, socio-cultural, organizational and environmental factors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vision was to raise awareness of sustainable settlement nationally and internationally and to be the Danish forum for sustainable settlement in developing countries. For the first 15 years, DIB was involved in settlement projects in Bolivia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Thailand and served as a collaborative and sparring partner for public authorities, private companies and other organizations with the same focus.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> ... to \"help to selfhelp\"<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dib.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC_0255-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-254\" width=\"211\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dib.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC_0255-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.dib.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC_0255-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A generational change in the organization and the funding-mechanisms has issued a shift in the focus of our organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The holistic sustainability concept is still the guiding principle for our work, but today DIB's core service consists of a higher degree of \u201cself-help\u201d than technical assistance. That is, building strong and resilient communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DIB's projects are mostly financed by Danida and therefore reflect the focus areas in <a href=\"http:\/\/um.dk\/da\/danida\/samarbejspartnere\/civ-org\/\">civil society policy<\/a>, which \"sets out the basis for cooperation with the Danish organizations that carry out activities in the developing countries\".
